The History of Sound Baths

While crystal singing bowls themselves are a modern invention, the concept of using sound for healing is ancient. Civilizations such as the Tibetans, Egyptians, Greeks, and Aboriginal Australians all used sound—through chanting, instruments, and tones—to shift energy, balance the body, and promote healing.

Greek philosopher Pythagoras (6th century BCE) believed that musical intervals had healing properties. He developed theories around “musical medicine” and taught that the cosmos was structured in a harmony that could be mirrored in music to bring balance to the body and soul.

At the Soul spa, we offer daily 30 minute and 60 minute sound baths to help you feel that medicinal sound feeling.

The term “sound bath” became popular in the late 20th century, especially through the rise of integrative and holistic wellness practices in the West.

Today’s sound baths often blend Eastern instruments (like crystal bowls that we use here) with modern neuroscience that supports their effects on stress reduction and nervous system regulation.
