What is Tarot?
I have been a Tarot reader for over 2 years now and I always try to explain tarot as simply as possible because at its core it is a very simple and practical took for self reflection.
I've been trained by some incredibly talented teachers, including the Reiki Maya Centre London for Reiki 1&2, SLC Astrology School, Tamara Driessen for Tarot Training and Anoushka Florence for Women's Circle Training.
I love all these ancient healing modalities but especially tarot. My style of reading is more of a counselling session with cards ~ Tarot is a great facilitator to talking about what is going on for you, so you can feel listened to and supported and guided by the cards.
I want Tarot to feel accessible and relatable for modern day life. I often use films and music to help explain the signs and meanings in the cards, as the tarot is used a foundation for a lot of popular films! Have you heard of The Hero’s Journey? hint…Star wars, Harry potter, marvel films…these films are the basic plot of the hero’s journey which is inspired by the tarot deck, mainly the major arcarna. One helpful way to understand tarot is through the Hero’s Journey, a storytelling pattern found in myths and movies across cultures. It’s the idea that a hero starts in an ordinary world, faces challenges, gets help, changes through trials, and returns transformed.
Just like the tarot, the hero’s journey is a storytelling pattern studied by mythologists and psychologists. It shows up in everything from ancient myths to modern movies: a person starts in a familiar place, faces challenges, learns lessons, and comes out changed.
Tarot uses this same structure.
The deck’s Major Arcana can be read as a symbolic map of that journey. Instead of gods or monsters, the cards show common human experiences—starting something new, facing uncertainty, making hard choices, hitting setbacks, and growing from them.
Tarot is a tool people use for reflection, storytelling, and self-understanding. It’s a deck of cards—usually 78 cards—with pictures and symbols that represent different human experiences, like change, conflict, love, growth, or decision-making.
Different people see tarot differently. Some treat it spiritually or symbolically, while others see it as a psychological or creative tool. At its core, tarot doesn’t tell you what will happen—it helps you explore what could be going on and what you might want to do next.
